Hardcover. thick12mo, 19cm, xvi,405,32p., ads., frontis and 56 wood engraved text illustrations, in the original small pebbled grain dark blue cloth, gilt spine titles and gilt pictorial illus on the spine, upper cover pictorial gilt illustrations on slight litter blue blind blocked panel, a fine copy a sophicated attractive original cloth binding (bhds). ~ Over 150 popular British street songs selected by the author from those used in the first half of the 19th century: Subjects include social, humor, country, nautical, Queen Victoria, historical, and political. The Ballad singers made money over any event which took popular fancy and the book includes a liberal selection of woodcuts that were sold with the ballads. An attractively bound book and fascinating look at a lost entertainment.
