An epic novel by MacArthur genius-award-winner and independent film writer, director and actor, John Sayles, set by turns in the Yukon, the Philippines, Cuba, and Wilmington, Delaware, Sayles' fourth novel presents a variety of perspectives on America in the last decade of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th. Four sets of vividly-described characters take part in the Yukon Gold Rush, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection and racial politics and conflict in Wilmington. One of Sayles' achievements is keeping the reader engrossed through nearly a thousand pages, ending with the electrocution of an elephant at Coney Island. First Edition, later Printing. 955 pages, 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches in brown faux leather boards with intricate, "victorian" design in gold and silver on front cover and spine. Removable paper label on back cover in lieu of dust jacket. This copy shows a very faint "shadow" in upper corner of front cover where sticker was removed, o/w only a touch of soiling on bottom text edge. No tears, creasing or chipping, not remaindered.
