The recipients were the French-American Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer and literary critic, Francine du Plessix (1930-2019), and her husband, the American abstract expressionist painter, Cleve Gray (1918-2004). Francine Du Plessix was the step-daughter of Alexander Liberman, who was the art editor of Vogue from 1941 to 1962, before becoming the editorial director of Condé Nast, and who contributed to this work. This collection of photographs was taken by Penn between 1947 and 1958, including portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, all of which first appeared within the editorial pages of Vogue. Tall quarto.
