Presentation copy inscribed to Francine du Plessix First edition, first printing, presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "For Francine and Cleve, With Love, Irving Penn". The recipients were the French-American Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer and literary critic, Francine du Plessix (1930-2019), and her husband, the American abstract expressionist painter, Cleve Gray (1918-2004). Francine Du Plessix was the step-daughter of Alexander Liberman, who was the art editor of Vogue from 1941 to 1962, before becoming the editorial director of Condé Nast, and who contributed to this work. This collection of photographs was taken by Penn between 1947 and 1958, including portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, all of which first appeared within the editorial pages of Vogue. Tall quarto. Original cream linen, titles to spine in black. With dust jacket and the pictorial slipcase (slight wear to extremities). Housed in custom green morocco-backed green cloth slipcase and matching chemise, titles in gilt direct to spine. Numerous monochrome and colour photographic illustrations. Slight foxing to boards, the binding otherwise firm and square, light foxing to first and last few pages, else internally fresh. A very good copy in the very good jacket, light soiling, slight wear to head of spine panel. Roth p. 158
