Stephen Turnbull is best known for his numerous books on samurai and Japanese military history, for which he is the recognised expert outside Japan. More recently he has expanded his interests into China, Korea and Southeast Asia, particularly in relation to their military interaction with Japan. First line

At its height, the world of the Mongol warrior encompassed a large proportion of the known world of the 13th century: Japan, Java, Syria, much of Russia and Eastern Europe had experienced the Mongol warriors as real foes.
