Description

[London]: Day & Haghe , nd. ca. 1833-6. Fine. 29 cm colour illustration taped inside a 39 cm cardboard frame. Neat and clean. Illustration of the oldest monument in Quebec City and the second-oldest war monument in Canada. One of the few world monuments dedicated to both victor and defeated. The monument now looks a little different from what it does in the illustration, having been whitewashed in the 1980s. Illustration includes a soldier on sentry duty and male and female viewers. Bouchette was the son of Lieut Col. Joseph Bouchette, Surveyor-General for Lower Canada. William Day (1797-1845) & Louis Haghe (1806-95) were partners in an early Victorian firm of lithographers who printed a wide range of subjects, such as hunting scenes, topographical views and genre depictions. Their lithographs were so meticulously conceived and technically advanced that in 1838 they were appointed Lithographers to the Queen.
