Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica VI. Nederlandse foliokaarten met decoratieve randen, 1604-60. / Dutch folio-sized single sheet maps with decorative borders, 1604-60. [Set of two volumes].

First edition of this excellent study on the production of geographical maps in the Netherlands in the 17th century accompanied by the album in folio of facsimile reproduction in black and color of some of the most prestigious maps of the period including world maps and continents de Blaeu, Pieter van der Keere, Hondius, de Wit, Visscher etc.

The author Günter Schilder (Vienna, born February 18, 1942) is a prominent Dutch historian of cartography and for many years held the world's only chair of cartographic history at Utrecht University from 1981 to 2004.

One of Schilder's great achievements was the founding of Explokart which focuses on the examination of ancient cartographic records & the relationships between travel travelers and cartographers.

One of his pioneering works was the nine-part facsimile series "Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica" whose objective was: the disclosure and inventory of map and atlas production in Amsterdam in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, focusing on the Dutch participation in the early geographical discoveries, and the conservation, restoration and production of facsimiles of those maps to safeguard this material for the future.
