London: Printed by James Flesher for Daniel Pakeman and Laurence Chapman, 1655 A poor copy of an extremely scarce study of Stonehenge by the 'Architect Generall' Inigo Jones. Jones was convinced that Stonehenge was a Roman Temple, particularly because he felt that the pre-Roman population was too lacking in knowledge to build it. The result is a classic example of fitting 'facts' to theory. This volume is complete with 7 folding and 3 single page plates. It lacks the frontispiece portrait. It is classed as 'poor' because the binding is in poor condition and there is some staining to the bottom edge extending up into the text particularly at pp to p 20 and from 36-49. The binding retains its contemporary boards but it has been rebacked at some point in suede leather providing a suede spine and new top corners. The bottom corners are very worn. The result is unpleasant. Newer endpapers have been provided with a newspaper cutting about the book, to the front pastedown. Contents: title (ownership signature to top); dedication 1p; commendation 1p; text pp 1-109 with 7 folding and 3 single page plates; errata 1p. There is a lot of staining to the title and dedication pages and the bottom side edges have been nibbled and are fragile. Text has light toning and occasional spotting, particularly to the side margin; plates are generally clean and complete with toning to edges. One has an old repaired edge tear. The book has been priced to take account of condition. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.

Internally there is an armorial bookplate of the Kinnaird family to the front pastedown and a signature of James West, clearly an early owner, on the fep.James has made some notes about the elections to Parliament for the County of Leicester in 1775. The fep has a tear at the top. With decorative title page (small repair to side margin); dedication 2pp; To the Reader 6pp; double page map; text pp 1-332; Catalogue 6pp; finis; table added in ms 3pp. The shields have been carefully coloured in (including one on the title page)- possibly by or for an early owner as there has been occasional offsetting from the colouring over time.
