Seven eng. plts., a few ink smudges, worming in the lower outer corners of the last four gatherings, not affecting the text but just within the plate-mark of one plate, dated ownership inscription "Henry Beighton F.R.S. 1722" to title and front free endpaper, the latter below a neatly written table in red and black comparing French and English measures, armorial bookplate of Sir Robert Newdigate and later Arbury Library labels to front pastedown, contemp. mottled panelled calf, joints cracked and sl. wear to head of spine, 8vo. ---- Norman 1441. - First edition in English of a classic text on hydraulics, translated by Newton's Huguenot protegé, the ingenious experimenter John Theophilus Desaguliers. Henry Beighton was a friend of Desaguliers and assisted him in preparing his 'Course of Experimental Philosophy', as well as in such practical affairs as the ventilation of the House of Commons.
