About This Item
While undated and unsigned, the work must date between 1941 - 1945. Patriotic, if crude, it is constructed within a cigar box (9” tall x 5 1/2” wide x slightly over 2” deep), the bottom of which is an abstract, colorful background to the painted cardboard figures, which are about 8” tall. Hitler is in a Nazi uniform and boots, his hands held high; F.D.R., formally dressed in a cutaway, is apparently screaming while holding the hips of the Fuhrer, whose pants are pulled part way down. A wire that stretches through the side of the box moves the articulated figure so that the President is clearly and vigorously violating Hitler from the rear. In very good condition. The possibilities presented by this work for a cataloguer to employ numerous plays on words are nearly endless, but we are determined to show uncharacteristic restraint in the face of the powerful temptation to be halfway clever and totally tasteless. It might be incorrect, however, to credit this restraint to a sense of propriety rather than to sympathy with the sentiments of the unknown artist, who was vividly expressing the wish to do unto others as they would have done to him.
