Description:
London: John Murray, 1900. Second Edition. Decorative Cloth. Fine. Second Edition, Fifth Impression, of Darwin's exhaustive study of the deleterious effects of inbreeding. 8vo: viii,487,[1]pp, with one diagram and 109 tables. Original publisher's standard green pebbled cloth, covers paneled in blind, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, black end papers, book plate on front paste-down. As with the first edition, the spine title spells "fertilisation" with a "z," while title page uses an "s." The text of this edition remains unaltered up to p. 370, where the addition of a large footnote necessitated resetting of the remaining pages. A truly superlative example, completely unopened and virtually pristine. Freeman 1260. First published in 1876, as a complement to Fertlisation of Orchids, but "too technical and too detailed to command a wide sale." (Freeman) N. B. London: John Murray, 1876. Second Edition. Decorative Cloth. Fine-. Second Thousand. 8vo; viii,208,32(publisher's catalogue)pp, with 13 text woodcuts. Original publisher's royal green pebbled cloth, covers paneled in blind (arches-style), spine lettered and decorated in gilt, chocolate-brown end papers, period owner's stamp top of half title. A superlative example, binding clean, tight. and unmarred; text fresh and bright, barring light foxing to endpapers and several pages within text. Freeman 837. ¶ Originally published in the ninth volume of the Journal of the Linnean Society, in 1865. Our copy is the first hardcover edition (second edition overall), second thousand. Only 500 copies were printed, making this, Freeman believes, "probably the smallest issue of any [John] Murray Darwin" title. Darwin described the origins and writing of this book in his autobiography, where he noted: "Some of the adaptations displayed by climbing plants are as beautiful as those by Orchids for ensuring cross-fertilisation." N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Description:
1781 BIRDS Art Buffon Natural SCIENCE Illustrated Flamingo Seagull Pelican"Virtually all the well-known writers of the Enlightenment were 'Buffonians'"
― Ernst Mayer
The monumental work by Comte de Buffon, "Histoire Naturelle," was fascinating 18th-century collection of articles and encyclopedia entries on material sciences, physics, chemistry, technology, as well as the history of animals. Buffon wrote the volumes with the intent of addressing all-natural history, but after realizing the grandeur of the work, he focused on the individual orders of living things. The DSB mentions that
"Buffon's order is formed by a philosophical bias rather than by science."
This eighth volume from 'Birds' contains 38 impressive illustrations including views of flamingoes, plover, terns, waterthrush, moorhens, coots, pelicans, herons, seagulls, and many others!
