About This Item
New York: Stein and Day. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. (c.1967). First Edition. Hardcover. [nice clean copy, no discernible wear to book, former owner's bookplate on front pastedown (see notes); the jacket shows just a touch of wear near the top of the spine]. (B&W photographs) A sharp-looking copy of the first book by this author, a "provocative tracing of the progress of commercial motion pictures to show how society shapes the uses of a discovery like moving film." Thomson has gone on to a distinguished career as a film critic, biographer, and novelist. In the former realm his works have included the indispensible "A Biographical Dictionary of Film"; as a biographer, he has tackled such challenging subjects as David O. Selznick, Orson Welles, and Marlon Brando; and his novels include the film buff's fever dreams "Suspects" and "Silver Light." This copy bears the bookplate of another notable film scholar, Stephen Mamber, the author of "Cinema Verite in America" and a longtime faculty member at UCLA's film school, where he pioneered the use of digital media for film analysis and criticism. .
