About This Item

1681. MOYENS SURS & HONESTES POUR LA CONVERSION DE TOUS LES HERETIQUES, et Avis et Expediens salutaires pour la Reformation de l'Eglise. Cologne, Pierre Marteau, 1681. 12mo. Two volumes bound as one. [xl]330[2]249[3]pp. First edition. A thoughtful and lengthy argument that all that is evil in the Church, such as the Inquisition, simony, and clerical misbehaviour, comes from the Papacy and the Cardinals, the solution being to abolish the Papacy, returning the Church to its original and scriptural simplicity. According to the "Avertisement" at the end, the manuscript was unfinished due to the ill-health of the anonymous author, an "homme de qualite et scavant." Pierre Marteau is a fictitious publishing house, never located in Cologne or anywhere else, providing a name under which French, German, and Dutch printers could disseminate controversial or pornographic books from 1660 to the late 18th century. Other Pierre Marteau titles tend to be anticlerical, politically inflammatory or scandalous. (Brunet: Imprimeurs Imaginaires.) The Dictionnaire des Ouvrages Anonymes states that it has so far been impossible to identify the author. Contemporary calf, spine gilt in five compartments. marbled edges. Wear to edges; small chips to spine. Internally fine. Scarce.
