Description

New York: Robert M. McBride & Company, 1935. Ignacio Silone (pseudonym for Secondino Tranquilli, 1900-1978) was a war hero, a founder of the Italian Communist Party, and (perhaps) a Fascist informer. Oddly, these five short stories were first published in German (1934). Not a common book, possibly because Silone later repudiated it because it was "folk-loric." This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First American Edition (stated First Edition). Translated from the Italian version by Samuel Putnam. Black cloth binding, with a tipped woodcut on the front cover. Clean text; 221 pages; wonderful illustrations. The novel comprises 200 pages; then follows a "Note on Ignazio Silone" by Nettie Sutro, translated from the German. Previous-owner signatures on the FFEP. Slightly slanted, and the spine is darkened enough to make the titling difficult; nonetheless, a solid copy. The dustjacket is present, but separated into its component parts; now protected from further deteriation in a plastic sleeve.. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/Poor. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
