Description

Washington City: R.C. Weightman, 1810. First Edition. Pamphlet. Good. Washington City: R. C. Weightman, 1810. First edition. 9 x 5 5/8 inches: pp. [4], including title page + 1 page resolution. Pamphlet with untrimmed edges, black type. Two small holes present (possibly stab holes). Slight paper loss to lower right-hand corner. Pages slightly wrinkled, especially near edges, and foxed. Vertical crease to second leaf. The American stateman Henry Clay (1777-1852) put forth this resolution that senator Timothy Pickering had indeed violated the Logan Act, which criminalized unauthorized citizens from negotiating with foreign governments that were in dispute with the United States. Pickering had been found guilty of holding several conferences with special British envoy George Rose, with whom he proposed the creation of a pro-British faction in New England. This was the start of the decline of Pickering's once prominent career. He had previously served as the Postmaster General and the United States Secretary of State under Washington and Adams. ***NOT FOUND POOLE***.
