Ottawa: National Gallery of Canada, 1979. 161 pp, 13" H. "(T)he record of a Canadian naturalist and artist, Henry Jackson, elder brother of A.Y. Jackson. It is also his record of changes, both social and environmental, that took place in Montreal and the Quebec countryside during the Depression, the Second World War, and the period immediately following. It is finally a testament to the rich inner recources of a man who, with very little money and no formal education, celebrated the abundance and variety of the natural world around him. The forty-two full-colour plates, forty reproduced actual size, reveal Jackson's extraordinary eye for detail and total command of technique. His masterful colouring and delicacy of touch fully transcend the original documentary purposes of his works. The detailed notebooks carefully kept from 1927 to 1954 richly illustrate not only Jackson's genuine, almost escapist, love of nature, but also his deep affection for people, especially the countryfolk, among whom he lived and worked." Very small area of color loss on rear board cloth. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, one tiny dent on rear flap-fold, a few tiny edge tears.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good+/Very Good. Illus. by Henry Alexander Carmichael Jackson..
