"Jerrold tempered his usually acerbic view of Victorian society when he wrote these lively studies of female domination for Punch, thus providing Keene with a congenial text twenty years later. The frontispiece is a fine example of Victorian color printing." (Ray. The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790 to 1914. No. 188.)
"Keene's drawings have an additional value rare at any time, but especially during the 'sixties: like Bewick, and Daumier, Keene drew ordinary people in ordinary life." (Ruari LcLean. Victorian Book Design & Colour Printing. p. 164.).

Douglas William Jerrold (1803 ? 1857) was an English dramatist and writer. Jerrold wrote for numerous periodicals, and gradually became a contributor to the Monthly Magazine, Blackwood's, the New Monthly, and the Athenaeum.
