London: Henry Colburn, 1828. Second edition. Three volumes, small octavo, pp viii, 309; 331; 311, half calf and marbled boards, very slightly scuffed, the spines a little faded. The first and last few pages in each volume suffer from foxing (see illustration), but otherwise the contents are remarkably clean and tight. One volume contains a signature on the first blank. The binding is by James Clyde, which dates it perhaps twenty years later than the books, as Clyde was the foreman to the long established firm of Herings, and took over their business and premises in 1845. [A rare early fantasy novel. It was written anonymously. John Claudius Loudon reviewed it ecstacially, and eventually invited the author to lunch, no doubt assuming it was a man. Seven months later he and Jane Webb were married ! The novel, though difficult to read nowadays, includes predictions of an early internet, espresso machines, steam-ploughs and air-conditioning.]. Second edition. Half Leather. Very Good.
