Description

New York: New York Theater Program Corporation, 1930. 2 volumes, 20x13cm, 16 and 40pp. Illustrations, advertisements. Illustrated, stapled wrappers. Title in pencil on front cover of one issue, bit of rubbing to edges and spines, some toning else clean and very good. Two wonderful, period theater programs from Irving Berlin's Music Box Theatre, which opened in 1921.  Both are for Topaze starring Frank Morgan, Phoebe Foster and Clarence Derwent, weeks of February 17th and April 14, 1930.  Topaze would be adapted into a film by D'Abbadie D'Arrast in 1933 starring John Barrymore and Myrna Loy.   The programs contain fantastic advertisements for tobacco, near beer, food, clothing, tires, candy, and everything a 1930s New York theater-goer might want.  Each includes a short story, "The Metropolitan Plan" by Jack Woodford, and "The Man Who Forgot" by John T. Kiernan.  Also notable in these issues are the two page spreads for Old Gold Cigarettes with art by Jazz Age cartoonist, John Held Jr. (1889-1958).  .
