About This Item

New York: Smithsonian Books/Collins, 2005. First edition. Hardcover. Remainder mark on bottom edge. Else fine copy/fine. 8vo. Two-tone boards. Pp. xx, 284. Maps. Index. The author, being then in his youth and still a French citizen, was drafted into the French Army. Although he was living and working in the United States, he returned to France and reported for induction. After basic training, which was uproarious at times, he was sent to Algeria where the Army was deeply involved in a vicious guerilla war. By 1957 he was in Algiers just as the revolt in the Casbah was beginning. Through luck and his social connections, he became a journalist whose job it was to chronicle the uprising, so his memoir is exceptionally interesting.
