Chapman & Hall, London, 1880. First edition. Oval mounted Woodburytype portrait frontispiece of Colonel Durnford Royal Engineers,. and one other mounted photographic plate, and two tinted lithographic plates. 8vo (9 1/4 x 6 inches), pages: xii:327:32 (publisher's catalogue dated November 1879). Recent full green morocco, spine gilt ruled and with gilt ornaments in compartments, gilt lettered direct. The cloth from the original backstrip and upper cover retained and bound-in at end. Presentation copy inscribed by Durnford's mother to "C.J. Moore-Miller from his (My Chief and I Colonel Durnford R.E.) mother E. R. Durnford Dec. 13th 1879". At Pietermaritzburg, Durnford was befriended by Bishop Colenso, and had a close relationship with the bishop's daughter Frances Ellen Colenso, the author of this volume, who also completed Durnford's work History of the Zulu War and its Origins, also published 1880. Written from the perspective of a fictional young soldier, 'Atherton Wylde'. Durnford was killed at the battle of Isandhlwana on the 22nd of January1879. Uncommon.
