Bruxelles: Galerie Smith 1961, 1961. Limited edition of 1099. Signed by Ting. pp20. Unpaginated. 380x270mm. Illustrated card wrappers, stapled. Two original double-page lithographs in six colours (one being the central pages and the other the cover). Six other colour and twelve black and white lithographs. Some slight creasing and bumping to the corners but overall a very good copy of what has been described as a beautiful but incendiary book. Ting was born in China in 1923, fleeing the Communist regime in the 1950s and then moving between homes and studios in New York, Paris and Amsterdam. In all three cities, he absorbed their specific counter-cultures, whether this was Beat poetry or the visceral expressionism of the CoBrA movement. "My Shit and My Love" combines these elements in work that is simultaneously angry, erotic, child-like, physical, funny, elemental and outrageous. Ting, who died in 2010, was all these things and, although this is not explicitly an autobiographical work, we should perhaps read it as such.
