An eccentric, humorous and whimsical memoir of his time in the US Army by Ludwig Bemelmans in a slim Modern Library reprint edition. With author's black & white illustrations at each chapter head and a foreword by the author. Author's cannon-and-cannonballs art to jacket front panel. --- In Toledano spine 8 / blue cloth / gilt titling on red spine & cover blocks / red topstain / grey Kent endpapers / jacket style g, verso lists 304 titles in ML catalog. Likely published c.1945. (Incorrect "First Modern Library Edition 1941" statement appears on copyright page, as it often does with copies of this title.) ML #175.2. --- A very nice copy: clean and tightly-bound but with prior owner's discreet signature to top of front free endpaper. Dust jacket with some light chafing to edges & a couple of tears, spine is mildly darkened but overall bright and wrapped in removable archival mylar protector.; 12mo - 7 to 7-1/2 in. tall; 151 pages .
