[ii]+428+[iv]+478+[iv]+464(last blank)+[iv]+428; post 12mo; qr. calf, rebacked with modern calf spines ruled in gilt and red morocco title labels lettered and decorated in gilt, early marbled papered boards, lightly rubbed, edges worn; Volume I lacking the half-title page (present in all other volumes), hinges neatly strengthened, a few small marginal chips or tears (with no loss of text), a little light foxing and occasional slight soiling; printed for G. G. and J. Robinson, London, 1794. Second edition. ESTC T119307. *Published in the same year as the first edition. Seminal gothic novel, famously parodied by Jane Austen in Northanger Abbey. Mrs. Radcliffe (1764-1823) was 'a pioneer in developing a literature of terror, and her influential novels stand apart in their ability to infuse scenes of terror and suspense with Romantic sensibility' [Britannica].
