New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1946. Hardcover. poor. Russell H. Tandy. 1946 printing, missing dust jacket. Blue boards with orange print on front and spine, and orange silhouette on front. Spine is damaged at the bottom, and boards are worn and stained with a sticker shadow on the front. Orange silhouette end papers, with brief gift inscription (Christmas 1946). Price tag from original book store on rear end papers (60 cents). This is Nancy Drew binding style 4: frontispiece on plain paper, no additional illustrations, and wartime (tanning) paper, used from 1942 - 1946. Grosset and Dunlap hard cover missing dust jacket; 1930 edition but 1946 printing, 200 pages. Illustration by Russell H. Tandy. 12mo (5"" x 7.5"") Dated to 1946 because (other than the gift inscription) there is no wartime paper conservation notice on the title page, which was in effect during World War II, and there are ads in the back; and the printing/binding style changed in 1947. The Mystery at Lilac Inn, Nancy Drew Mystery Story #4, by Mildred A. Wirt writing as Carolyn Keene. This title was shortened and rewritten in 1961 by Harriet S. Adams and Patricia Doll. This is the original 1930 25 chapter text.

About the author

Carolyn Keene is a pen name used by a variety of authors for the classic Nancy Drew Mystery series. The first author to use the pseudonym was Mildred Wirt Benson, who wrote 23 of the original 30 books. Other writers who have adapted the "Carolyn Keene" moniker include Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Walter Karig, and Nancy Axelrod.
