Illustrated throughout with reproductions of woodcuts, portraits, and photos of more recent personalities in modern science. Glossary of proper names and medical terms. Bound in maroon cloth with gilt vignette stamped on front board, gilt lettering on spine. Two chickpea-size gouges on front board; former owner name and date on the front free endpaper. In the printed dust jacket, a touch soiled and with a chip on the upper edge of the rear panel. A lively survey of the history of medicine by the Yale professor, tracing the attribution of disease from conjecture to scientific fact, much of the latter occurring in only the last 150 years. Includes insightful capsule biographies of leading innovators. The uncommon dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
