Johann Conrad von Mechel, Basel: ., 1726 pp. 479 + Remarkable engraved frontis, with a portrait of the author held aloft by three angels. Title page printed in red and black. Text in German fraktur type. Small 8vo. 180 mm. Attractive early full leather binding, elaborately tooled in blind. Spine worn; joints cracked. no clasps. Early manuscript ownerships and sentiments, penned by Steffan Bu(e)ng in 1756. Very scarce. OCLC shows only one holding of this edition in libraries world wide. Johann Arndt [1555-1621] was a German Lutheran theologian. His books were widly influential in the 17th and 18th century. Arndt was always held in very high repute by the German Pietists (in Europe and America). The founder of Pietism, Philipp Jakob Spener, repeatedly called attention to him and his writings, and even went so far as to compare him with Plato. Attractive example of a rare proto-Pietist work.
