About CHRIS DRUMM Iowa, United States

Biblio member since 2003
Seller rating: This seller has earned a 5 of 5 Stars rating from Biblio customers.

Mail-order bookseller since 1982. Inventory is not visitable, and often not visible (boxed), so no storefront, unfortunately. That mitigates item-descriptions from changing much over time. Books are kept in plastic bags or plastic wrap, so no dust or humidity. Books listed as "new" that might be forty or more years old are unread, obtained direct from publisher or distributor. And carefully preserved! (At least I try—cheap paper browning is not something out of my control!) I also try to grade books conservatively and indicate obvious flaws (which don't necessarily include previous-owner's name/date of FFE). Plus I give info on printing/edition/price-clipped djs/etc. A lot of my older listings are copied direct from the printed-paper catalogs I used to send out bulk rate. These listings economized on paper, so they might be shorter than what I can do now on-line. Plus I add photos now. These older listings, lacking ISBNs, can be bargains, with the older pricings still unchanged. As many of you mav have noticed. Occasionally, since these books were listed on Biblio and in my old mail-order printed catalogs concurrently, I may have neglected to remove the Biblio listing for books sold from my catalogs. I hate it when I sometimes have to reject an order because of no-stock, but there are too many books listed for me to be able to verify all of their continued availability. Presently I'm only selling books here on Biblio, but I'm toying with the idea of resurrecting my catalog as an EPUB, starting from scratch. We'll see about that!

Terms of Sale: Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. If not as described, I pay return postage. Note that the postage amount I charge (currently $3.50) applies to any size order sent domestically in the United States. I.e. one book is $3.50 for postage and subsequent books add $0.00. Unfortunately that's not the case for International orders. I've tried to make my shipping matrix match what it would cost to send even heavier books. But I can adjust to the real cost if asked. Biblio does have a service that boosts international orders from Philadelphia. I'm not sure how that works out costwise at the buyer's end, but I get to send Media Mail to Philly and not have to fill out the triplicate customs form. I've started adding tracking to orders after they are sent out. I have to hand-copy from USPS receipt. I mark orders as shipped initially without tracking, when books are pulled and address label is created. I add tracking when I return from post office with receipt. I try to limit outgoing to twice a week (Monday or Tuesday and Fridays).

About this book

Acclaimed as a successful expression of the futility of war, Norman Mailer's The Naked and the Dead follows the story of an army platoon of foot soldiers fighting for the possession of the Japanese-held island of Anopopei during World War II. The novel, which embodies wartime disillusionment, is partly based on Mailer’s own experiences with the 112th Cavalry in the Pacific. Through its four parts, The Naked and the Dead addresses themes of loneliness, death of fear and dying, and brotherhood. The novel is written in gritty, journalistic detail. However, this tone was dialed back as publishers persuaded Mailer to use to euphemism “fug” in lieu of the mother of all curse words — the “F” word — in his novel.

The Naked and the Dead sold 200,000 copies in its first three months and was a New York Times best seller for over a year. Despite some controversy among critics, the novel remains important in American literature. The Naked and the Dead is ranked 51st on Modern Library’s “100 Best” English-language novels of the 20th century. The novel was later adapted into a film of the same name in 1958.

First Edition Identification

Rinehart & Company first published The Naked and the Dead in 1948. Bound in black cloth, first editions have the Rinehart logo, a script R in a circle, on the copyright page. The dust jacket of first editions state the original retail price of $4.00 along with a review by Stanley Rinehart that begins on the front flap and continues on the back flap. The 721-page novel was produced in a print run of 25,000 copies. Signed first editions have sold for upwards of $7,500.
