New York: Walker/Weatherhill, 1969. First American edition (1969.) Hardcover with dust jacket. Folio with 177 pages. Photo essay on 'Hadaka Matsuri' in Japanese culture, most subjects clothed in loincloths and only partially naked with 145 high quality black and white photographic images. Tamotsu Yato (1928-1973) was a Japanese photographer and occasional actor responsible for pioneering Japanese homoerotic photography and creating iconic black-and-white images of the Japanese male. The book is in very good condition with shelf wear and rubbing to edges. The dust jacket has some slight scuffing to front panel with one 1/2" of laminate loose. Interior is clean and tight. Also published in Japanese under the title Taido (Way of the Body). Essay by Hitoshi Tamari; edited by Keizo Aizawa. Translated by M. Weatherby and Paul T. Konya. Dust jacket states: "140 photographic studies in gravure of over 50 of Japan's most perfectly developed young men--young men who in their single-minded devotion to a rigorous training regimen might even be called Japan's new breed of samurai." No previous owners' names or other markings. Pages bright and clean. Small closed tears and minor losses to dust jacket (see image). 7 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches.
