Bound in full gray cloth with gilt lettering on spine, and a gilt ship on front cover. Of an edition limited to 481 copies, this is copy number 112. Adams provides a fine introduction to the narrative, which was a mendicant designed to illustrate redemption of a sinner. Patterson sailed with Commander William Bainbridge on the first US ship into Constantinople. The Sultan was intrigued by news of a new country called the United States of America, and allowed him safe travel through Islamic waters. Patterson references a slave ship, John Jewitt and his ordeal at Nootka, and the customs of Fijians.

Early inscription: "David Arnold his book" and modern bookplate of Walter F. Judd. § First edition, compiled by Ezekiel Terry. "This book is very important for its description of Fiji and Hawaii. It also relates to the coast of Guinea, Havana, Guadeloupe, California, the northwest coast of America, Australia, and Canton. Patterson made three voyages to the northwest coast, visiting Queen Charlotte Islands and Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island, where he had much trouble with the Indians. The visit to California was to trap otter, carrying a large number of Indians as passengers from Sitka, together with their canoes, at the request of the Russian authorities in Alaska.
