(CAD) Library pocke,t due slip, labels and stamps, pages clean, the paper to the rear hinge has cracked (becasue of the map pocket) and has been repaired, Good ex-library copy; no dust jacket possibly as published. Original red cloth with silver on black spine blocks, xxii, 768pp. Colour frontis, colour and B&W plates. The four facsimile folding maps in the map pocket are in perfect order. This is the stated first Hurtig edition of the account of Franklin's 1819-22 expedition . In 1819, Franklin was chosen to lead an expedition overland from Hudson Bay to chart the north coast of Canada eastwards from the mouth of the Coppermine River. Between 1819 and 1822 he lost 11 of the 20 men in his party. Most died of starvation, but there was also at least one murder and suggestions of cannibalism. A heavy book. (7.0 JM LVR 202/a3. 1st. First American edition.This expedition also known as the Coppermine Expedition of 1819–1822 had as its goal the exploration of the northern coast of Canada, which was accessed by way of the Coppermine River. The British expedition was organized by the Royal Navy as part of its attempt to discover and map the Northwest Passage. It was the first of three Arctic expeditions to be led by John Franklin, and also included George Back and John Richardson, both of whom would become significant Arctic explorers in their own right.
