London: John Murray, 1814. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Octavo. 255pp. Apparently an advance copy printed recto and verso (alternating). Inscribed by the author to his "Excellency Mr Van Hogendorp. Van Hogendorp has handwritten 18 corrections in the text on the blank pages opposite the type. His corrections vary from a spelling correction to mostly full paragraphs correcting history as he saw it as a participant. Dirjk Van Hogendorp (1761-1822) was an official of the Dutch East India Company who tried to incorporate the liberal ideas of the French Revolution into Dutch colonial policy.In 1810 he was appointed as general in the Grand-armee and aide-de-camp of Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1812 he was Gov. of Vilnius, in 1813 he was appointed as the gov of Hamburg. Bound in original calf and marbled boards showing wear at the extremities. Van Hogendorp has written in French. Translation provided.
