About This Item

London: G & W Nicol, 1790. and the Subsequent Voyage of Part of the Crew, in the Ship's Boat, from Tofoa, one of the Friendly Islands, to Timor, a Dutch Settlement in the East Indies. Written by Lieutenant William Bligh. Illustrated with Charts. Pp. iv+88, 4 charts (3 folding, including the frontispiece); med. 4to; contemporary half calf, lettered and ruled in gilt, marbled papered boards, slightly rubbed, with a few small surface grazes, the edges lightly rubbed and fore-corners worn, joints starting; upper hinge cracking, tiny pinprick hole to the first two charts (not affecting either image), the top fore-corner of a couple of leaves lightly creased, a little light foxing and occasional slight soiling; George Nicol, London, 1790. First edition. F.71; Wantrup 61; Hill 132. *Bligh's own account of the notorious mutiny and its aftermath. For six weeks, he and eighteen loyal members of his crew voyaged over three and a half thousand miles in a twenty-three foot launch, through mostly uncharted waters. 'What is not so well known is that in the course of this hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland as he passed along it - an extraordinary feat of seamanship' [Wantrup, page 128].
