Volume is ex-library copy with library stamps of University of California dated 1870 and found on title page, p.57 and p.131. Soundly bound in modern blue buckram. Collation: Title page, xii, [8], 391 with 5 maps and modern end blanks. Overall condition is good with some condition issues. All repairs described are professionally done. Title page rehinged. Frontis map and map opposite p. 277 are original. Frontis map is rehinged. 3 maps bound at end are professional full size reproductions (image of California map is provided). Appendix (pgs. 385-391) is also professional reproduction. Page 20 has closed tear repaired with rice paper. Water stain at head of spine waxes and wanes on pages 121-146, and 193-249; occasionally encroaching on text. Ink stain margin of p.220-21. First edition, first printing, 1865, softcover pamphlet in good condition. 30 pages plus blank plus wraps. In original paper wraps. No writing inside or out. Edges are chipped, ink stain upper outer edge not affecting text, pages are toned, corners bumped. Author put together this pamphlet to encourage the public to encourage the Union Navy to consider his designs for a warship. Scarce. None listed for sale; none found at auction. 1858 London hardcover. First edition. Volume has undergone repairs: recased using original red boards with sympathetic new leather spine; new endpapers. Interior has moderate foxing, smudges and wear but nothing vandalized. Paginates: [6], (1)-239, errata slip plus 6 unpaginated plates. Complete as issued except for blanks. Numerous engravings in text. Uncommon true first. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: although classified as fiction what the author is doing is relating facts about recent world travels in a style designed to appeal to youth. Includes instruction on use of scientific instruments by travellers - an idea adopted not long after by The Royal Geographical Society in "Hints to Travellers" - so maybe this book is not 'juvenalia' as one might be led to believe.

First edition, hardcover, New York, 1865. Condition is Very Good: primary condition issue is presence of a modern professional reproduction of the folding map. There is mild to moderate foxing seen on the plates, very little in the text. Some occasional old corner folds. No writing, vandalism or other issues. Binding is sound. Paginates: blanks(2), map, (i)-(viii), (9)-82, blanks(2), 8 unpaginated plates. Original blind stamped boards. Back board shows considerably more wear than the front. The new map is on laid paper similar to that used in the book. An extremely scarce book. None for sale. Last seen at auction 1908. Sabin 461. WorldCat locates 18 physical copies. First House edition of this famous report. 1845. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing.
