NY: Harper & Brothers. G. 1844. 1st Edition. Hardcover. First edition, Volume one only of two, bound in black, blind stamped p atterned cloth with gold spine lettering. Frontis plate and several en gravings. Most of the fold-out map of Texas has been torn away leavin g a 5 1/2" x 5" long piece. Good condition. Slight spine slant. Frayin g and rubbing to the cloth's edges. Rubs and bumps to the corners Rubs to the spine tips, the spine's base has a 1/2" chip. Former owner's n ame and the date are inked on the front fly leaf. The pages are readab le but are heavily foxed through-out. The hinges are soft but not crac ked or torn. The front fly leaf has a 4 1/2" diagonal crease at its lo wer right corner. Serviceable copy of a scarce book. .

A large Lakeside Classic of 585 pages plus an additional 34 pages of a historical introduction by Milo Milton Quaife, University of Chicago PhD, and the Original preface plus a reproduction of the title page of the original publication by Harper & Brothers in 1844. Just before Chapter one of the text there is a fold-out map showing the route of the Santa Fe expedition. There are no tears or extraneous folds on the map. There is a tissue guarded captioned frontispiece entitle "Scamper Among the Buffalo". There are no tears on the tissue. The top edge of the pages are gilt. The outer edge of the pages are deckled. This work is the first of the "red lakesides" and the front cover has a gilt border with a gilt emblem of the Lakeside Press in the center of the front cover. Gilt lettering on the spine is sharp.
