[32 pages of advertisements--some with color], pages 149-298, [and 10 pages of advertisements with some color]. Illustrations (with Seventy-two pages in color). Maps. Cover has wear and soiling. Some corner water staining noted. National Geographic is the official magazine of the National Geographic Society. It has been published continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. This issue includes: Exploring Davy Jones's Locker with Calypso with 10 illustrations (5 in Natural Colors) by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Luis Marden; Camera Under the Sea with 40 Illustrations (30 in Natural Colors) by Luis Marden; Virgin Islands: Tropical Playland, U.S.A. with map and 24 Illustrations (20 in Natural Colors) by John Scofield and Charles Allmon; The Making of a New Australia, with map and 27 Illustrations (22 in Natural Colors) by Howell Walker; An Exotic New Oriole Settles in Florida with 4 illustrations (1 in Natural Colors) by Charles M. Brookfield and Oliver Griswold; Pescadores, Wind-swept Outposts of Formosa with map and 22 Illustrations (18 in Natural Colors) by Horace Bristol; and The International Geophysical Year with 2 maps and 13 Illustrations by Hugh Dryden. Hugh Latimer Dryden (July 2, 1898 - December 2, 1965) was an American aeronautical scientist and civil servant. He served as NASA Deputy Administrator from August 19, 1958 until his death.
