[16 pages of advertisements--some with color], pages 1-140, [and 8 pages of advertisements with some color]. Illustrations (with Seventy-two pages in color). Maps. Cover has wear and soiling. Some damp signs on front cover National Geographic is the official magazine of the National Geographic Society. It has been published continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. This issue includes: A Stroll Through Scotland to John o'Groat's with Map and 51 Illustrations (45 in Natural Colors) by Isobel Wylie Hutchison, R. A. Stewart, and D. S. Boyer; Hunting the Heartbeat of a Whale with a Map and 15 Illustrations (13 in Natural Colors) by Paul Dudley White, Samuel W. Matthews, and J. Baylor Roberts; Desert Sheikdoms of Arabia's Pirate Coast with May and 39 Illustrations (30 in Natural Colors) by Ronald Codrai; The Enigma of Bird Anting with 21 Illustrations (15 in Natural Colors) by Hance Roy Ivor; and Tom Sawyer's Town with Map and 22 Illustrations by Jerry Allen. Isobel Wylie Hutchison (30 May 1889-20 February 1982) was a Scottish Arctic traveler and botanist. She also wrote poetry, books on her travels and articles in various geographic magazines. Ronald Codrai, whose day job was working for the oil exploration concession, was a talented and prolific amateur photographer who turned his lens on what is now the UAE from the late-1940s.
