[32 pages of advertisements--some with color], pages 427-566, [and 18 pages of advertisements with some color]. Illustrations (with Sixty-four pages in color). Maps. Cover has wear and soiling. National Geographic is the official magazine of the National Geographic Society. It has been published continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. This issue includes: Surprising Switzerland with Map and 44 Illustrations (36 in Color) by Jean Shor and Franc Shor; Back to the Historic Black Hills with Map and 23 Illustrations (19 in Color) by Leland D. Case and Bates Littlehales; Honey Eaters of Currumbin with 9 Illustrations in Color by Paul A. Zahl; Himalayan Pilgrimage with Map and 13 Illustrations by Christopher Rand; A New Look at Kenya's "Treetops" with 4 Illustrations (1 in Color) by Quentin Keynes; Life 8,000 Years Ago Uncovered in an Alabama Cave with 21 Illustrations (10 in Color) by Carl Miller and Brooks Honeycutt; and Shipworms, Saboteurs of the Sea with 9 Illustrations by F. G. Walton Smith and Robert F. Sisson. As a staff photographer for the National Geographic Society for 37 years, Bates Littlehales covered a wide range of assignments around the world. Quentin George Keynes (17 June 1921 - 26 February 2003) was an explorer, writer and filmmaker. He wrote articles for the National Geographic Magazine.
