National Geographic is the official magazine of the National Geographic Society. It has been published continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. This issue includes: On Australia's Coral Ramparts with Map and 50 Illustrations (41 in Color) by Paul A. Zahl; The Great St. Bernard Hospice Today with 13 Illustrations (6 in Color) by George Pickow; Pennsylvania Avenue, Route of Presidents with Map and 21 Illustrations (13 in Color) by Dorothea Jones, Stuart E. Jones, Volkmar Wentzel; Norway's Fjords Pit Men Against Mountains with Map and 22 Illustrations (18 in Color) by Andrew H. Brown; An Engineer's View of the Suez Canal with Map and 12 Illustrations by Glen R. Edgerton. Glen Edgar Edgerton (1887-1976) was a United States Army officer, who served as the Governor of the Panama Canal Zone from 1940 to 1944. George Pickow (1922-2010) was a photographer and filmmaker who chronicled the folk and jazz music scenes in the United States, United Kingdom, and other countries. Volkmar Kurt Wentzel (1915-2006) was a German American photographer/cinematographer. He was with the National Geographic Society for nearly 50 years.
