On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. The first issue of National Geographic Magazine was published on September 22, 1888, nine months after the Society was founded. Starting with its January 1905 publication of several full-page pictures of Tibet in 1900-1901, the magazine changed from being a text-oriented publication to featuring extensive pictorial content. Included in this issue are: Holidays Among the Hill Towns of Umbria and Tuscany with 41 Illustrations by Paul Wilstach; Man and Nature Paint Italian Scenes in Prodigal Colors with 33 Natural Color Photographs by Hans Hildenbrand; A Walking Tour Across Iceland with 39 Illustrations by Isobel Wylie Hutchison; The Island of the Sagas with 20 Illustrations by Earl Hanson; and The Indispensable Sheep with 20 Illustrations. Isobel Wylie Hutchison (30 May 1889-20 February 1982) was a Scottish Arctic traveler and botanist. She also wrote poetry, books on her travels and articles in various geographic magazines. She painted many scenes from her adventures.
