U.S.A.: Johnson, Fry & Company, 1862. First American Edition 1st Printing. LEATHER. Near Fine/No Jacket. Alonzo Chappel. From the estate of Steinbeck's bibliographer Homer Adrian Goldstone. First Edition--Two volume set. Full Morocco with gilt edges all around. Finely decorated exterior in tooled leather and gilt lettering. 5 Raised bands on the spine. A handsome near fine set with a tiny bit of rubbing to the extremities-- and a bit of light foxing to a few pages. Steel engravings to the portraits from full length portraits done by the author with facsimile signatures of the figures (from record) below the portraits. There are 57 engravings on Vol 1 and 62 on Vol 2. Portraits are accompanied by a brief biography penned by Duyckinck---a biographer and historical narrator. Volume 1 has almost no exterior rubbing and Volume 2 has just a little bit of rubbing mostly to the extremities. The gilt edges all around are like new condition. 9 1/4" x 11 1/4". Additional digital scans available. From Washington to Colfax--including statesmen, Presidents, military heroes, authors, and the finest legal minds of our country's history.
