Prepared from the Official Copy. [Cover title begins: Citizen's Edition of the New National Tax Law, Complete...] New York: Beadle and Co., [1862]. vii, 122 pp. Publisher advertisements to wrappers. 12mo. (6-1/2" x 4-1/4"). This new agency was assigned a schedule of taxable goods and, for the first time in U.S. history, an income tax, which was established to help finance the Civil War. Beadle's first tax guide was published in 1860 and went through several editions. The 1862 edition is notable because it was the first to present the Revenue Act's thorough revision of the tax code. It is one of the earliest, if not the first, layman's guides to this recently established system. OCLC locates 3 copies in law libraries (California Western School of Law, Worcester Trial Court, Yale). Johannsen, The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels I:412.
