Very attractively bound in half light brown leather, marbled boards, two dark red leather title bands with gold lettering, 5 raised bands, endpapers decorated with fine mulitcolor swirls; 44 colored and 5 plain illustrations engraved on steel, 97 engravings on wood, 596pp. Title page for first edition precedes the second edition title page, index for first edition follows the index for the second edition and is paginated per the first edition. Does not include the 6 folio maps that were published separately. CONDITION: Slight rubbing to edges of cover, leather worn through on very tips of outer corners; bookseller pencil notes on first blank page couild easily be erased, otherwise interior is clean and unmarked; occasional very light foxing throughout plus approximately one inch of heavy foxing on outer margins of the 5 black and white plates at p118 (two crania), p172 (Persepolitan Sculpture), p206 (three skulls),and p218 (two pages each with 3 skulls). Gorgeous hand-colored engravings. Overall nice condition. OVERSIZE. CONDITION: Overall very nice.
