Edinburgh: Edmonston and Douglas, 1863. xlvii, 336 pp, 7 1/2" H. Green leather spine with 5 raised bands and gilt decoration, maroon leather title block with gilt lettering, green leather corners, marbled paper-covered boards, all edges of text block marbled. Marbled endpapers, b&w frontispiece (swans) and a few small b&w drawings throughout text. Preliminary material includes a Preface, Memoir of Mr. St. John and Appendix to Memoir and the book concludes with a Note to January, Index and Scientific Index of the Vertebrated Animals Described or Alluded To. The main body of the text is divided into chapters by month: January; February; March; April; May Part I; May Part II; June; July Part I; July Part II; August; September; October Part I; October Part II; October Part III; November, December Part I; December Part II. In each chapter the author gives his observations on the wildlife he encounters and hunting & fishing in mid-19th century Morayshire, Scotland. With the book plate of Sir George Stephen (the first president of the Canadian Pacific Railway and an avid sport fisherman) on the front pastedown. Very light browning in the margins of the pages, light to moderate edge wear, green leather has areas of surface loss - mostly at corners of boards, a triangular pice of leather is missing at bottom corner of front board, some light wear on spine bands, some darkening to top of textblock marbling.. First Edition. Half-Leather. Good.

Complete with forty letter pressed etchings, as called for, with tissue guards intact. Interesting photographic bookplate from the library of A. M. Nairn at Lassintullich, an old sporting Lodge in Scotland. Covers show bumped corners, spine darkened, front cover sunned, loss to upper edge of the spine.
