London: John Murray, 1892. Hardcover. Very Good. The first edition to be produced with Clodd's biography. Presentation copy to Alexander Sinton (founder of the eponymous school in Cape Town's Athlone suburb) with Royal Geographical Society insignia in gilt to upper board. Half-bound with six panels and five raised bands to spine. Gilt titling with gilt borders to bands. Spine titling reads "Bates's River Amazons - Clodd - 1892". Boards very lightly rubbed at extremities. Gilt to top edge of textblock. Marbled endpapers. Tipped in certificate to front pastedown signed July 1893 by the President and Secretary of the RGS. Frontis. portrait of Bates. Prelims very lightly foxed. Light spotting to textblock edges and very light foxing to closing leaves. Fold-out map present at rear crisp and undamaged. Memoir incorporates two coloured plates illustrating mimicry between butterflies. Some browning to reverse of first colour plate and facing leaf. [lxxxix] + 395pp. illus. and incl. index. Occasional light brown marks to text. Binding solid. Memoir includes correspondence from and to inter alia Charles Darwin, Joseph Hooker and Alfred Wallace. Heavy volume. Very scarce in this edition.
