New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1907. Tall thick 8vo. xx, 411, [1] pp. Title in red & black. Colour frontisp., 95 photo illustrations, 2 large folding colour maps. Ribbed-green publisher’s cloth, gilt lozenge decoration of American Eagle & globe front cover, gilt lettering on spine, t.e.g. (very minor bumping to couple corners, shelfwear), still VG bright copy, w/ initials of former owner on ffep., small bookseller’s label on rear pastedown for Johnson’s Bookstore, Springfield Stationers. First edition of this well-illustrated work detailing the sixth Artic Expedition of Robert Peary building upon his Greenland expeditions, where he gained much of the experience used in his later treks to conquer the Pole, as well as an Inuit mistress, and child, both of whom he leaves behind in 1909. The SS Roosevelt was the first ship ever built in the Western Hemisphere for Arctic exploration, and was a schooner designed and built with an ice-strengthened flexible wooden hull, sheathed in steel and braced by a unique system of trusses.
