New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1948. First edition. First edition, first printing. xviii, 404 pp. Bound in publisher's black cloth with gilt spine lettering. Initials and stamp to paste down, else Fine in a Very Good+ dust jacket, sunned spine panel, small closed tear to top of front panel, rubbed edges. Uncommon. A sociological and economic study of the Black ghetto in the 1940s by the first African American person to be appointed to a cabinet-level position in the White House. Weaver would serve as the first chairman of housing and urban development under Lyndon Johnson, 1966-1968. He was an economist by training, a professor, and one of the most prominent Black intellectuals of the early Cold War.
