About This Item

New York: International Publishers, 1948. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good -. The uncommon 1948 1st edition of this important study "about a nation within a nation -- America's 15,000,000 oppressed Negro citizens. It is unique and important as the first comprehensive volume on the Negro question in the United States by a leading Negro Marxist", himself the son of former slaves. A fragile title in its scarce original incarnation but still solid and presentable. Tight and VG in its blue cloth, with very light staining along the fore-edge and a bit of unobtrusive soiling to the top-edge. And in a bright, price-intact ($2.25), Good+ to VG- example of the delicate dustjacket, with chipping and creasing along the spine ends and the flap-folds. Light rubbing and soiling as well to the panels. Still though, a copy that has nicely survived its 75+ years --in spite of having been heavily read-- and has remained all but completely intact. Chapter headings include: The Plantation --- Instrument of Oppression; Big Business and the Plantation; The Shadow of the Plantation; "Liberal Remedies"; Land and Freedom; and The Negro Liberation Movement.
