R. Ackermann. London. 1813 (Circa 1870?). PORTFOLIO OF 13 PLATES. No text, as issued. (Paper size 14.9 x 11.3 inches. The portfolio is 15.5 x 12 inches). Portrait of Blake, by T. Phillips, RA; Engraved title page (dated 1808) and 11 plates, all stating Ackermann as publisher, dated 1813 and engraved by Louis Schiavonetti, after Blake's designs. The pages have a little bumping to the edges but well away form the engraved area. Plates a little dusty and toned but the impressions are good. The original portfolio is brown Morocco grained cloth with elaborate blind tooled designs to both boards. Gilt lettering to the front board. Only one small piece of one silk tie remaining. Yellow coated endpapers. 3 small clippings from bookseller catalogues, each listing copies of the Blair/Blake book, tipped in to the front pastedown endpaper. Macmillan and Co. London. 1891. FIRST THOMSON EDITION, Large paper issue. One of only 300 copies issued. Large 8vo. (10.5 x 7.4 inches). Illustrated throughout with 101 fine line drawings by Thomson. Finely bound by Cedric Chivers of bath in early twentieth century binding of full plum morocco. Spine with raised bands, the compartments ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Decorative line and floral design to both boards. Board edges double ruled in gilt. Mottled coloured endpapers. Turn ins with double ruled lines and floral design. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Two previous owner bookplates on the front paste down endpaper. A little fading to the spine but overall a very near fine copy.

London: R. Ackermann, 1821. (6), 46 pages, followed by 48 plates printed only on the rectos. The text, though not attributed in the book, is by the British romantic poet William Wordsworth, who continued to revise it for his own travel book, A Guide through the District of the Lakes. The illustrations are 48 soft ground etchings by William Frederick Wells after the watercolors by Wilkinson. Titles of plates in order: 1. Small thick quarto, pp (12), 520, [26], illustrated with an engraved title page, an engraved frontispiece (though here bound in after the preliminary pages) and 45 plates (of 46 - lacking the plate which occupied pages 55/56), some age-toning and slight foxing throughout, the plates a bit more browned but without the intense browning often found in this book, overall quite tight internally, one preliminary page and pages 395-398 protruding slightly and a little chipped and frayed at the margins, full vellum binding (probably original), rather used and marked but quite sound and firm, the upper and lower cover a bit warped and bowed, the front hinge cracked but firm and showing traces of old glue. Through the mid-18th-century, large collections of knowledge were relegated to specific areas of study like law, medicine, or religion. However, Denis Diderot's 'Encyclopedie'
changed the public's knowledge base as well as setting a standard for future generations of acquiring knowledge on many different subjects. This was the first encyclopedia to include contributions from many different named writers. It also was the first encyclopedia to describe work-related topics like agriculture, engineering, cooking, and trade.
One of the aspects that made this work so desirable was the incredible, detailed full-page engravings. In fact, the illustrations themselves were so sought-after that they were of published on their own apart from the encyclopedia.

W. Bromley, Hammersmith, London.,1799FIRST EDITION. Folio.(17.4 x 11.2 inches). 14pp, 9 pages of plates. An early issue of this work, with paper watermarked 1796. Stipple engraved, hand coloured title page and seven full page, hand coloured plates, plus full page engraved speech from As You Like it, titled The ages of Man, featuring one of Shakespeare's most enduring and often quoted lines - All the world's a stage, and all the men and women meerly players- each printed by R. Fenner. The plates are engraved by William Bromley after Stothards drawings. . Fine recent binding of quarter red straight grained morocco, the spine, ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Marbled paper on boards. Red morocco tips to corners of boards. Some offsetting from the Illustrations onto the text pages and some staining to the margins only on 5 pages but overall a very good attractive copy of this scarce and beautiful work.

First of the Brussels Foppens editions of Veen's enduringly popular "Emblems from Horace" (principally from the Odes and Satires), a classic of emblematic literature. 4to: [8],205,[3]pp, with full-page engraved coat-of-arms, portrait of "Octavio Vaenius," and 103 engraved emblems with mottoes in Latin and stanzas in French below each plate and verses in Latin, Italian, Dutch and French on verso of preceding plate. Contemporary sprinkled calf, very skillfully rebacked, spine in six compartments between raised bands with central printer's ornament in blind, recent blue morocco lettering piece gilt, title page in red and black with portrait medallion. A fine and clean copy in an early fine binding of half green morocco. The spine has two raised bands, each with decorative gilt tooling. Tan title label, gilt. Gilt ruled box designs. There is an illustrated multi coloured leather onlay design to the middle of the spine showing a couple walking in the rain, under an umbrella. Blue cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Previous owners colour bookplate to the front paste down. A fine copy in a fine binding. The binding is unsigned but certainly the work of a master bookbinder.
