About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1953. 238 pp, 8 3/8" H. Contents: Foreword; About People and Atomic Energy; The New Force; From Manhattan to Nagasaki; Postwar Development; Destruction Unlimited; The Atomic Impasse; Battlefield A-Weapons; Peacetime Power; Atomic Engines; The Atom - Man's Servant; Secrecy and the Atom; Power for the Future; Index. "The story beings with early atomic experiments in distant laboratories in Italy and Germany and leads swiftly up to Professor Einstein's fateful letter to President Roosevelt, and the overnight mobilization of American science. We see the mammoth plants at Oak Ridge and Hanford thrown up in haste to solve the riddle of separating the U-235 isotope from the U-238, the first controlled chain reaction in the squash courts of a Middlewest university; the crucial work in the laboratories at Los Alamos. (It) brings the military and diplomatic story up to date, detailing the atomic scientists' 'march on Washington', the establishment of the AEC, the Bikini tests, the multiplying of the A-bomb's destructive power; and, within seven short years, the coming of the H-bomb. And there is the story of atomic energy's present and future potential in peace as well as in war - as an instrument for industrial power as well as military; for science, medicine, agriculture as well as (perhaps instead of) strategic and tactical weapons." Previous owner's name and date on free front endpaper, very light browning to endpapers, very light toning to margins of pages, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear, light browning to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has heavy wear and small chips/tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light to moderate general edge wear, light to moderate rubbing with some small areas of surface paper loss/staining at bottom of front panel, light browning on inside, tiny stain on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Fair.
