This new addition to the family of Oxford anthologies is a completely fresh selection and, as Mr. Amis explains in his lively and foreceful introduction, the principles on which he has based his selection are very different from those employed by W.H. Auden in The Oxford Book of Light Verse (first published in 1938); Auden's definitionof 'light' was closer to 'popular' than to 'humorous', and he included poems on the grounds that they were, in their time, accessible to a general audience. Kingsley Amis's selection--which includes some previously unpublished mastrpieces as well as familiar favorites--is lighter in heart, and closer to a modern expectation of what 'light' means.
